Dexedrine or Dextroamphetamine is approved for medical use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the USA. It is classified as a schedule II drug because its abuse has very serious effects. It is illegal to sell or buy the drug over the counter. Dexedrine is available only on prescription by certified doctors. It is used as a stimulant in the treatment of central nervous system disorders.
It was originally used as a diet pill as it can suppress feelings of hunger. The use of Dexedrine was more common in the 1960s and 1970s. Today students, especially when they are studying for exams, are known to abuse it so that they are able to stay up longer.

- An agitated person should avoid the drug.
- A person who has used monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) in the last 14 days should not use Dexedrine.
- A person who has a history of abuse of any kind of drug. It should be avoided due to its potential for addiction.
- A patient with heart problems should also stay away from it as its use increases the chances of a heart attack due to the increase in blood pressure and heart rate.
This is why the advice of a doctor is required for any person to be allowed to use this drug.
